Shequeena McKenzie, at just 28 years old, has made history as the first Black female judge in McComb, Mississippi. Her appointment as Judge Pro Tem by the city's selectmen in October 2021 marked a significant milestone not only for McKenzie but also for the city itself. Additionally, she serves as a judge in the neighboring city of Magnolia, further extending her influence and commitment to justice.
McKenzie's path to this achievement was far from easy. Growing up in McComb, a city marked by a history of racial violence and discrimination, she faced numerous challenges as a young Black woman aspiring to a career in law. Despite these obstacles, McKenzie remained steadfast in her pursuit of her dreams.
She earned her degree in Political Science and Human Rights from the University of Southern Mississippi, followed by a law degree from the Mississippi College School of Law, where she was one of the few Black students.
Her decision to pursue a career in law was driven by a desire to effect change. "I went to law because I did not want to talk about what wasn't being done," McKenzie explained. "I did not want to sit there and dwell on the negativity; I asked myself what I could do to help out the world." This proactive approach has been a hallmark of her career.
Before her judicial appointments, McKenzie practiced law part-time in Jackson, Mississippi, specializing in family law, criminal defense, and civil litigation. She also dedicated time to mentoring young girls and women, as well as serving as a lay counselor for individuals with mental health issues. Her commitment to community service and advocacy for underrepresented groups reflects her broader vision for societal improvement.
McKenzie draws inspiration from figures like Vice President Kamala Harris, whose historic achievements have provided a powerful example of breaking barriers. "It gave me hope watching her," McKenzie said. "It showed me that anything is possible." She hopes to similarly inspire young Black girls to pursue their dreams and confront the obstacles they may encounter. "Sometimes you will enter the room and no one will look like you," she said. "Do not let that overcome your abilities. You belong in that room. You deserve to be in that room. It is a mindset you have to get. Once you get that mindset, do not let anyone stop you."
Her appointment as a judge is both an honor and a responsibility that McKenzie takes seriously. She is committed to serving her community with fairness, integrity, and compassion. "It was a surreal moment because I work hard, I have faith," she remarked. "The next thing you know, you start reaping the benefits of the things you have invested into. It was definitely a full-circle moment for me."
McKenzie's journey from a challenging upbringing in McComb to her current role as a trailblazing judge is a testament to her perseverance and dedication. She has broken barriers and shattered stereotypes, demonstrating that with hard work, faith, and determination, anything is possible. Her story is a beacon of hope and a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on their community and beyond.
In her role as a judge, McKenzie aims to make a positive difference in the lives of those who come before her court. She embodies the change she once sought, serving as a role model and a source of inspiration for many. Through her work, McKenzie continues to pave the way for future generations, ensuring that her legacy will be felt for years to come.
