Jennifer King is making waves in the NFL once again, this time by becoming the first female coach for the Chicago Bears. This historic move is just another milestone in King’s groundbreaking career, reflecting her tenacity and dedication to shattering glass ceilings in a male-dominated sport.
Born and raised in Reidsville, North Carolina, King has always been a trailblazer. After earning a degree in sports management in 2006, she embarked on a remarkable journey in women’s football. King excelled as a quarterback and receiver for the Carolina Phoenix in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) from 2006 to 2017. Her versatility on the field was further demonstrated when she played as a defensive back and receiver for the New York Sharks in 2018 and as a safety for the D.C. Divas in 2019. Her 12 seasons of play and seven-time All-American status underscore her deep understanding and passion for the game.
King’s coaching career took off in 2018, thanks to a pivotal encounter with then-Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera at the NFL's Women's Forum. Rivera, a former Bears linebacker and assistant coach, recognized her potential and brought her on as a coaching intern. During her two seasons with the Panthers, King honed her skills and prepared for greater opportunities.
When Rivera moved to the Washington Commanders in 2020, King followed, initially serving as an offensive intern. Her talent and dedication soon led to her historic promotion in 2021, making her the first Black woman to be named a full-time NFL coach. As the assistant running backs coach for Washington, she broke new ground, proving her capability and resilience in a high-pressure environment.
