Marvel Studios has been on a hot streak lately. The blockbuster movie studio has been churning out record-smashing hits on a regular basis — pleasing both casual movie-goers and hardcore geeks all over the world. From the groundbreaking Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings to the predictable success of hit TV series Loki aired via digital streaming on Disney+, there seems to be no signs of stopping for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, some audiences believe that the release of the Chloé Zhao-directed film Eternals back in November 5 is a dent on the current record of Marvel Studios — we beg to differ. Here are four reasons why Eternals was a good movie despite mixed reviews.
4. The Visuals Are Spot-On
Known for her astounding visual work on films such as The Rider and the Best Picture-winning Nomadland, Chloé Zhao has successfully expressed her creativity and attention to visual detail with her work on Eternals. Preferring real-life locations for the many beautiful settings featured all throughout the film over the typical use of green screen and other artificial manipulation techniques — Eternals earns high marks as a masterfully shot Marvel movie.
3. The Fight Scenes Are Amazing
As expected of a blockbuster superhero movie produced by Marvel Studios, Eternals has also executed its fight scenes perfectly. With a creative blend of visual chaos and a wide variety of skills and superpowers to showcase that comes with a huge cast of superheroes with their own set of abilities — Eternals also delivers a punch of excitement that will keep viewers watching until the end.
2. Diversity Done Right
Eternals first gained traction on social media because of its ensemble lineup which featured a diverse cast of popular actors and actresses from all over the world. Going all out with the budget, Eternals is an inclusive film which raises the banner of inclusivity for people of different backgrounds and identities. The movie stars numerous big names in the industry such as Hollywood-darling Angelina Jolie (Thena), Game of Thrones star Kit Harrington (Dane Whitman), and Don Lee (Gilgamesh) to name a few.
1. A Refreshing Take On The “Marvel Formula”
Eternals steers away from the typical black-and-white formula which avid viewers of Marvel Studios have been used to for the past phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Without stepping too much into spoiler territory, Eternals wraps up with an open-ended question on the consequences of the many moral choices that the main characters were faced with. The thick plot of Eternals paired along with an obscured depiction of right and wrong to justify the actions of the characters in the film makes for a memorable movie that will keep viewers reflecting for a while even after the credits roll in.
