N.O.S. Miss Illinois is Saving the Planet One Plastic Straw at a Time

Sydney Bitar is the reigning Nation of States Miss Illinois and will compete in their national competition next summer. Through her environmental platform, Sydney’s SOS (Stance on Sustainability), Sydney is saving the planet one plastic straw at a time.  Sydney created her platform to educate, advocate, and act on plastic pollution and reducing single-use plastics. Her efforts have been highlighted on several media channels.

In August 2020, Sydney began her freshman year at Purdue University in West Lafayette Indiana. At Purdue, Sydney is pursuing a degree in Fashion/Retail Management. In the short time school has been in session, Sydney has already become involved in Purdue’s Fashion & Retail Organization, the Purdue chapter of the National Retail Foundation and she has become a sister in the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.  Sydney’s career goal would be to work in merchandising and or social media for a major brand or designer.

In her spare time, Sydney is an active volunteer in her community, works her platform and is an active model. Sydney has walked in New York Fashion week since 2018 and currently serves as a Brand Ambassador and model for the New York Fashion Week production, HiTechMODA. Sydney has appeared in campaigns for Mac Duggal, has worked with prestigious designer Marc DeFang and can currently be spotted on the Alyce Paris website.

What are some major achievements or accolades that you've accumulated?

I have been blessed that my work for the environment has been spotlighted on several channels including newspapers, Chicago TV and on Ellen DeGeneres’s “Ellen Tube” during her “Do Good, Feel Good” campaign.

I am proud to have graduated high school with honors, Magna Cum Laude.

In pageantry, I have received several awards that I am very proud of including Pageant Planet’s Top 10 Teen Pageant Bodies 2018.

How do use your platform as an influencer to spread "What's Good" to the world and who have you impacted?

I use my platform to educate, advocate and take action to reduce single-use plastics and take better care of our environment. The earth supports ALL people, we can’t live without it. Through my outreach, I have impacted others to make small changes in their relationship with single-use plastics. I have had restaurants change to serving paper straws, individuals change their habits and even preschoolers become interested in recycling. The smallest changes can add up to a lot of good!

What are some projects that you are currently working on or promoting?

Currently, due to college and the pandemic, projects and promotions are somewhat on hold. I am continuing to advocate for the environment through social media and have found virtual service opportunities mentoring exchange students via zoom. As soon as we are allowed, I will resume speaking on the environment and hosting beach clean-ups!

Who do you have to credit for your success?

First and foremost, all credit belongs to God, he is the source. I have incredible family and friends who support and encourage me and the extended sisterhood that I have made through pageantry.
